Dogwoods in bloom.

I snapped these photos of a flowering dogwood near my home today. Dogwoods–actually a shrub, not a tree–are a common sight in the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains and are so well known their beautiful four-petaled white blooms are the North Carolina state flower.

  1. Beautiful! They were also adopted in 1956 as British Columbia’s floral emblem here in Canada. The Pacific Dogwood is a tree that grows six to eight metres high and flowers in April and May. In the autumn it is conspicuous for its cluster of bright red berries and brilliant foliage. It’s illegal here to pick them! 🙂

  2. We have one with white flowers in our front yard and there’s one with pink flowers next door. They are still not in bloom but I’m sure by next week they’ll have their flowers along with my lilac bush…which is really a tree.
