This is going to blow your mind.   The ocean is mindbogglingly deep.  It’s way deeper than Mount Everest is tall —  it’s seven miles to the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean (Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench).

We have only explored about five percent of the ocean.  We really have no idea what’s down there or what sort of huge, terrifying creatures may live in its pitch black depths.  It’s really incredible just how much of the earth remains unexplored, and most of it is underwater.

We really live on two planets in one.  The terrestrial planet, where we are, lies above, and the oceanic planet, with its atmosphere of water,  has its own mountains, valleys, deserts, and even its own lakes and rivers (brine pools).

    • The only person ever to make it to the bottom of Challenger Deep (over 37K feet) was the filmmaker James Cameron (Titanic, the Abyss, Terminator movies) in 2012. He was always fascinated by the deep ocean and of course the wreckage of the Titanic, the footage of which appears in the movie Titanic.

  3. I love the videos we sometimes get of the deep oceans. I wish more priority was given to the health of the seas and oceans as we came from there. It is the base of our food chain. If we destroy it, we destroy ourselves. Hugs

  4. Dear Lucky, Neat website 🙂 And to think, a few years ago, i had assumed that the average depth was about four or five hundred feet. But checking a world map, that gave ocean depths, the average is around two to three miles. Though, until visiting this website, i thought man had explored most (like 80%) of the ocean.
