…just sitting on my darkened bug infested porch with citronella candles like tiny bonfires illuminating the painted mint green table with burnished gold
…I eat my buttercrunch ice cream from a chipped ceramic bowl and listen to distant fireworks
I remind myself that tomorrow the grass needs a mow…
…I watch as fireflies twinkle like Christmas lights
and mosquitoes intent on their suicide missions crash into the sulfurous flames
and sizzle like dying fireworks.

I was totally alone on the 1st, Canada day here, and I spent the majority of the day emptying storage, sorting and putting away things, followed by ice cream, chocolate and Netflix π

Well the end of the day didn’t sound bad at all…nothing better than ice cream, chocolate and a movie, right?

Really, I was happy with it in the end. π

I’m sorry I’m not as poetic as you are π

Why sorry? and who says you aren’t?

Your article was poetic in nature and content….my response was totally practical, though I CAN be poetic π I did not take the time to respond in like manner, which might have been interesting to do, so I am sorry I wasn’t so inclined π

Nothing wrong with being alone. At least you can do whatever you want!

Our town has a nice fireworks display that we can see from our front yard. But right now we are holed up inside the house, hearing the booms going off, coddling two very nervous dogs.
I have been alone on so many holidays. It’s a more intense kind of loneliness than you feel on regular days.

You know I’m with you. Fireworks were exciting when I was little…but they don’t rock my world they use to. I think a bowl of buttercrunch ice cream sounds pretty good. And it looks like the song of distant fireworks inspired your creativity.
What you wrote was beautifully poetic…

Fireworks are kind of overrated. Glad you liked my poem.

A few years ago i didn’t like holidays because i wasted energy longing to get invited to the “right” parties, which all too seldom happened. Now i pray to the Lord those invites don’t happen. And the Lord answers my prayer. i don’t need the temptation to drink and such. Really i don’t. The Lord is Good π

I try to stay out of all the holiday drama too and I rarely drink. My holidays are usually very quiet.

I was pretty much alone too. It was rather nice. There was a calm before the fireworks too so for a couple hours it was eerily silent outside. I loved it.

Here, only the sound of the crickets and the booms and fireworks sounds were very far away so it was pleasantly eerie.
