and the worst thing about being around these jerks for any considerable length of time is: becoming very VERY guarded around about everybody. i realize that it’s natural for people in their 50s to become wary, but anyone who is/was around narcs especially so.

I agree. They train us to become hypervigilant around everyone and to always be on guard. Because of them, we don’t trust anyone.

No comfort, no peace, no intimacy and no true love. But people that love them want to believe so badly, they make themselves believe the narcissist can change, can be better, can love them.
It’s like being in a mirage in the desert. In the absence of water some people will drink the sand. Get help and take back control of your life.
