Saying goodbye to a friend

My son had to put his pet ferret, Ozzie, to sleep today. Ozzie was suffering from cancer and was having seizures, so having him put down was the humane and compassionate thing to do. This photo captured their last moment together at the vet’s office. It made me cry, and I don’t cry easily. There’s just something about the human-animal bond. Ozzie must have known he was loved.

RIP Ozzie. You’re over the rainbow bridge now.

    • I lost my dog, Daisy, 2 years ago on Dec 23rd. The end came fast; she had a massive stroke. Fortunately, the people who loved her were all here to hold her and pet her while we all said goodbye. I think she felt safe at home with her loved ones.

  2. How sad. I know exactly how this feels and it is like loosing a family member. But you must remember and remind your son that prolonging his suffering would have been a selfish act. Although it hurts he did the right thing in the best interests of Ozzie.
    My deepest sympathies go out to you and your son. I hope you can find comfort in the memories you shared with Ozzie x x x

    • I actually never met Ozzie, so I’m not grieving, but I’m certainly sad for him and my son. He really loved that little guy. I totally agree that prolonging his suffering would have been selfish–not to mention very expensive–for an animal that would only have lived another year or so anyway.

  4. When I was a kid I was really close to my families cat Socks he was all gray except for around the feet where he was white so it looked like he was wearing socks. He was a wonderful playful cat and I was very young when he passed away. It’s amazing that it can feel like a family member has just vanished. The picture made me tear up, thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Aww, Socks. Didn’t Bill Clinton have a cat named Socks too? I have a black and white cat with white paws too, they do look just like a pair of socks, or boots, haha.
      Yeah, losing a pet really can feel like losing a human member of the family. The picture made me tear up too–I love that tender moment it captures. Thanks!

  7. our deepest condolences to you and your son, losing a pet is never easy as they become part of you and part of your family.

    • People who don’t have pets sometimes don’t seem to understand this. If you’re broken up about losing a pet, they’ll say, “well, it was “just” a cat/dog/ferret, etc.” They really do become members of the family and losing a pet you were close to can be almost as painful as losing a close relative or friend.
