When I was new to blogging and still didn’t get many comments, I used to check my Reader every day and frequently commented on other people’s blogs. In my blogging articles, I’ve always stressed how important commenting is, because it helps you build a network of fellow bloggers who can share your posts or link to your blog. One of the nicest things about WordPress.com is the sense of community.

But lately I haven’t been following my own advice as much as I’d like and often fail to comment on other blogs, or even “Like” new posts. I may not need to “network” the way I used to since this blog is doing well on its own now, but I do miss the sense of community. The problem is time. After reading and replying to my own comments, it’s hard to find enough time to read other people’s posts (and there are so many good ones–how do you choose which ones to read?) and I don’t want to “Like” or comment on something I haven’t even read.

Sometimes I worry when someone who has been commenting a lot suddenly stops, even though I know they’re probably in the same boat as me and are just too busy and can’t find the time. So I just want to take a moment to say it’s nothing personal if I don’t “Like” or comment on your article. Also, please don’t take it personally if my replies to your comments aren’t very long.

  1. Life is like one big juggling act, isn’t it? There’s never enough time to do all the things we need to do, want to do, HAVE to do. Sigh.

      • Thank you! Here in New Mexico we have a big blizzard coming our way, according to the local weather forecast. It’s supposed to start the day after Christmas and contine through Monday morning, with snow accumulating up to 2 feet — which is a LOT in this typically semi-arid region. I’m kind of nervous right now!! Trying to stay calm but not having much luck. Maybe if I scream real loud that will help?

        Just kidding. That would make the dogs go ballistic. 😀

        • A blizzard? Wow. Believe it or not, I almost wish it would snow, at least for Christmas. Instead they are predicting thunderstorms, possibly severe! It’s very warm out. The weather is just crazy.

          • I prefer snow this time of year, too. But not a blizzard! We have a very tall, very old Elm tree in the back yard, with branches hanging over our small house and the little trailer where my stepdaughter lives. I’m worried that the blizzard might bring some of those heavy branches down, if not the whole tree.

            Last week I had a professional tree trimmer come look at it. He wants $2,400 to trim our tree, or $3,200 to cut it down! Not happening!! I think it is the tallest tree in town. I love when birds nest in it, but it scares me in storms.

  2. Although some think it is a tit for tat thing. I feel if I support a blog I enjoy but fail to get a response then I am falling on deaf ears.

    • I know exactly what you mean. Irrational or not, I still feel that way if I get no response when I comment on another blog. I try to always say SOMETHING or at least “like” it so they will know I read it, even if I don’t have time to comment or don’t quite know what to say.

  4. Glad you’re busy and reading and writing! We won’t worry about the like/reply thing since not responding is a sign you’re having a busy, happy life. Way to to communicate with your community! You got it going on, girl. I was thinking about how the Library of Congress records every Twitter comment for history sake. This blog would be a great instrument for history because it’s so real. You’re so real and your commenters are so real. Merry Christmas!!
