I just finished an article that is both profoundly depressing and profoundly eye opening. I won’t summarize it here. Just read it. I think the writer (Umar Haque) nailed what happened to us in a way no one else has.
Fascism came to America in 2018. And most of us still won’t admit it. We still think, “it can’t happen here.” But it already has. Until we admit we have become a fascist nation, things will continue to get even worse.
The cure for fascism is almost ridiculously simple: restore the middle class. There’s a simple way to do this. But will America ever admit it failed its middle class and humble itself enough to do what needs to be done to restore the middle class? I wonder.

You’re right. But with the Trump administration, it all came out in the open. There is no longer any attempt to hide it, and it has gotten far worse, with barely any checks and balances left.
In one sense, it’s good that it’s out in the open. We can see exactly what we’re dealign with. But I’m also afraid it may be too late. We should have started fighting it back in 2001 but even now, people refuse to admit what we have become.

It’s a good article, but I don’t agree that fascism came to America in 2018. Different aspects of fascism have been part of American society, not all at the same time and in the same place, since the beginning. Americans just didn’t know how to recognize it, or to recognize the warning signs of it getting worse. Hence the surprise on the American left when Trump won. Nobody in Europe was surprised. It was just a matter of time.

I actually agree. Fascism has been around a long time, and every so often becomes more obvious. But generally it’s been hidden.
