If you’ve lost views recently due to loss of StumbleUpon, try Pinterest!

StumbleUpon, which was bringing me an insane number of views every day (who knew it had that much influence?) recently folded and changed their name to “Mix.”  I don’t like Mix.  I find it confusing, impossible to understand or to use, not to mention the aggravation of creating a custom sharing icon for it.

Why are things that work perfectly well always getting “improved”?   If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!    It’s so frustrating and infuriating!

But I think I found a solution, or at least a partial solution.  I already had a Pinterest account from way back when I started this blog (or maybe even before?), but never used it and never bothered sharing anything to it.  Pinterest seemed kind of pointless as far as social media platforms go, just a bunch of pictures with links on them.   But really, that’s all SU ever was too.   Both are social media aggregators, not really social media sites in the same sense as Facebook or Twitter.

Okay, so since I’ve been sharing to Pinterest, my stats have improved. My views have gone back up.   Alright, fine, maybe they’re not as high as they were during the SU days, but definitely better than they were earlier this month.  My statistics page shows that after Google, Pinterest is now my second highest source for views.

I hope this helps some of you who have also experienced a drop in views and activity since the demise of SU.    It also helps that the Pinterest share button is included in the WordPress sharing buttons, so you don’t have to go to the trouble of creating a custom button for it.

  1. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”–That’s how I feel about WordPress pushing the Gutenberg editor on us and talking about deprecating the classic editor and all our widgets. What? Why?? I’ve seen the editor and it’s not an improvement. And why are they screwing with the widgets?

But back from the digression and to your post. I don’t think I got a lot of hits from StumbleUpon, though I seem to recall signing up, years ago. I have a Pinterest but, like you, rarely do anything to it. I don’t get the point of it either. It basically looks like a place to pin up recipes and pictures. But once in a while, somebody will pin one of my posts, and send hits to me, so hey! 😀

    • I was surprised about Pinterest too, since I also thought it was mainly a place for pictures and recipes, haha!

What’s this about the Gutenberg Editor?
I have heard nothing about it. Is that something specific only to WordPress.org? I hope they let you keep the classic editor and don’t get rid of your widgets. I don’t know what I’d do without my widgets.

      • At the moment it’s just for wordpress.org, though people have been saying it should be done on wordpress.com and leave wordpress.org alone. They’re basically trying to make the WordPress editor work like on other sites such as Ghost or Wix, a bunch of drag-and-drop and turning the toolbar into a bunch of hidden menus. A lot of people think it’s great; a lot of people think it sucks. There are a lot of complaints that Automattic is forcing us all into this instead of giving us a choice.
Automattic gave us a plugin to keep the Classic Editor, and they’re saying we can keep it “for a time,” but who knows how long that’ll be.

Last night I checked out other platforms, but most of them were either 1. for developers so too technical, 2. too expensive, 3. don’t allow you to keep your domain name, and/or 4. have the Gutenberg-style editor.

I thought the change was just about the style of editor, but now people are saying the widgets, header, footer, shortcodes, etc. will be “deprecated,” and I wonder how the heck our sites are going to work now.
