12 reasons why I don’t like autumn.

Welp, it’s almost that time of year again. Admittedly, it’s not bothering me as much this year. But please, shut up already about Pumpkin Spice, which ought to be illegal.

ugly_autumnIn my neck of the woods, this is what Autumn looks like.

Yesterday was the first cool-ish day we’ve had since May.   While the lower temperature felt nice, I also noticed for the first time that some of the trees are beginning to change colors.  It was also overcast and gloomy, and I realized that my SAD symptoms have kicked in full bore.   I just felt like crawling into bed to escape from the sadness I felt.   After winter, fall is my least favorite season.   Here are 12 reasons why I hate it.

1.  Around here, the “changing colors” just means the trees change from green to brown to bare.  A few turn this unattractive shade of deep maroon or this dirty looking yellow, but unless you go up to the Parkway, we really don’t get the brilliant fall colors you see in places further north…

  1. If I want pumpkin spice flavor I’ll go get some actual pumpkin pie (which, I recently learned is mostly other varieties of squash) and slather it with whipped cream (the real kind). At this point, here, “leaf season” is still only threatening, but the hordes are here anyway. Although I don’t have SAD to any diagnosable degree, I still think the bears have the right idea about winter.

  2. My problem is with the extremes in heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. I like that it stays light longer in the summer though and I wish we could just forget about turning the clocks back. I think that would help a lot of people.

But I do love the fall. My birthdays in the fall although I have different feelings now about my birthday (which has nothing to do with my age). I like the fall and spring for their middle of the road temp and weather, most of the time anyway, in this neck of the woods

That being said, it has been hot and humid the last couple weeks around here, (Phila PA) which I can’t stand and just yesterday I was wishing this heat away.

As for pumpkin or pumpkin spice, I think the only thing I don’t like in that flavor is beer. 😀

  3. I made the above comment before reading the original and now I am back to comment again. I read the original when you first posted it too. As I read, I realized you make a lot of good points. I had to laugh though when I read, “Newsflash- pumpkin tastes like nothing.”

  4. “He had never liked October. Ever since he had first lay in the autumn leaves before his grandmother’s house many years ago and heard the wind and saw the empty trees. It had made him cry, without a reason. And a little of that sadness returned each year to him. It always went away with spring.

But, it was a little different tonight. There was a feeling of autumn coming to last a million years.

There would be no spring. (“The October Game”)”

    • I get that sad feeling Bradbury describes so well. Even though October can be beautiful (even around here) with perfect weather, I can’t shake that feeling that everything’s dying and winter’s fast approaching.
